The S3 is one of the most discrete dashboard cameras in the market today. Its compact size and design keep it well hidden inside your car. Despite the small size, this das cam packs some very excellent features that every car owner might need at one time or another.
For starters, it is very simple to install. It comes with a mount that sticks directly on the windshield using a 3M double sided adhesive tape. Once the mount is in position you simply slide the main camera on to it (the mount). The fact that it is detachable makes it possible to remove the main camera from the mount when you don’t need it.
Inside the dash cam is a built-in 450mAh battery that supports up to 30 minutes of recording when the camera is not plugged to your car’s power. It is meant to help you save recordings in case of an emergency. That said, it is wise to keep the camera plugged to your car at all times. Some welcome news is that it can’t drain your car’s battery as it is designed with energy-saving technology, including a timer that can switch off the LCD display automatically.
The S3 is a dual dash cam. That means it is a two-in-one camera that features a front and rear view (both cameras record simultaneously). But you have the option of detaching the rear camera. All you have to do is unplug the USB cable that connects it to the main unit. Both cameras will start recording automatically when you switch the ignition on. They also stop when the car’s engine goes off.
Both cameras record super HD videos of 1920 x 1080P at 30 FHD. If you choose to disconnect the rear camera, the quality of the front one goes a notch higher to 2560 x 1440P. They capture still pictures at a resolution of 12 megapixels. The stunning quality ensures that the road ahead and at the back are clearly visible on the 2.4-inch LCD display that is fitted on the dash cam. You can trust it to show license plates and signs very clearly.
The front and rear cameras have a wide viewing angle of 1500. That’s wide enough to show the road and a whole lot more of the environment around your car. You can adjust both cameras up and down to capture your most preferred view.
There’s a built-in G-sensor that triggers recording whenever the camera senses any motion, crash or vibration. It also locks data automatically when it detects an accident. That should make it easy to keep critical recordings that might serve as proof.
The S3 performs exceptionally well whether it is day or night. Its wide dynamic range (WDR) technology and 6-glass lenses compensate for light and dark spots. Those two, combined with the Novatek 96663 processor and OV4689 CMOS image sensor, account for the camera’s ability to record crispy clear images when you are driving at night.
For easier data management, the S4 uses loop recording. It overwrites the oldest recordings with the newest files when the SD card is full. Although the package includes a 16GB Kingston SD card for storing recordings, you can opt for more storage space by purchasing a card with a larger capacity. The camera supports up to 128GB.
This dash cam measures 5.9 by 4.6 by 3.5 inches. It weighs 1.3 pounds only. That small and compact size makes it stealthy and discrete.
