The Vantrue R2 HD Dash Cam is manufactured by a little-known company called Vantrue. That being said, it offers much more than what your ordinary or popular dash cam might have; including 2K footage. First of all, package contents for the unit include an R2 dashboard camera, a suction mount, a USB cable, a USB car charger, a mini to HDMI cable, and a user manual.
Discreet but powerful
The 4.33 X 1.26 X 1.97-inch device weighs 2.88 ounces but has multiple components packed in the seemingly small body. The front part is black but has a chrome housing that holds the lens, LED lighting system, and a Vantrue R2 logo.
At the back of the unit, you will find a 2.7″ LCD screen, control buttons, and a LED indicator. The top has more buttons (for power and photos) as well as an AV port and mount. The right side has a mini to HDMI port and a reset button while the left side is where you will find the microSD slot.
Easy recording and installation
Mounting the Vantrue R2 HD Dash Cam is fairly simple. It is meant to hang down the windscreen but can also fit behind the rear view mirror. The unit has an integrated USB power connection. That means it will connect to power automatically when the camera hooks up into the mount. Once connected, the camera will start recording automatically when you start the car and stop when the engine stops running.
However, its parking mode feature triggers recording when it senses motion from 33 feet away. It is worth noting that the camera is fitted with a 320mAh battery; which is insufficient to sustain the parking mode. Therefore, you will need to connect it to an external power source when in that mode.
The features above are made possible by the installed Ambarella A7L50 processor alongside an OV4689 CMOS sensor. Apart from auto on/off and parking mode functions, the processor also enables a broad range of camera features. They include lane departure and collision detection warnings.
Furthermore, there is a GPS feature that allows the camera to store location data alongside the footage. But you will need to purchase an extra receiver to use it. The built-in G-sensor is responsible for taking the latest footage and storing it in a secure folder once a collision is detected. That prevents the camera from overwriting important footage with new clips.
High quality video
Of course, this Vantrue R2 HD dash cam review wouldn’t be complete without a look at video features and quality. For starters, the f/2.0 lens provides a very wide field of view of 170 degrees.
That is enough to pick up sufficient events at the front and sides of your vehicle. The camera records 2K HD videos of 2304 X 1296P and 2560 X 1080P at 30fps. That is way beyond what most dash cams can offer. At night, its sensor and WDR system ensure that the footage is as clear as day.
Additional, the camera mount has a swivel so that you can easy turn the dash cam to face you and record the inside of your car, or to a side angle. While this doesn’t make it exactly a dual channel cam, it seamlessly lets you records multiple views without having to remove and reinstall the camera.
- Reasonably priced considering the features
- High-quality images and recordings
- High-quality images
- Sturdy mount
- 30-day money back guarantee
- 18-month free replacement of parts for quality-related issues
- GPS is not built in
- Very bright sky affects image quality
In summary, if you are all about quality then this camera will be an exciting addition to your car. It is one of the few dashboard cameras that can actually record up to 2K videos. Basically, it is as good as some DSLR cameras as far as video quality goes.
