The A119 from Spy Tec is your perfect companion for any drive, from a short journey to the mall or a trip lasting hours or days. This forward-facing dash cam attaches to the inside of your car’s windshield and is very easy to install.
Simply attach the adhesive mounting pad to the windshield and then place the camera in position. Once installed, attach its power cord to the car’s cigarette lighter and you’ll be good to go.
Spy Tec is offered in two versions of the A119:
- The first one is the original A119 (simply known as the A119). It’s a great dash cam, but it lacks a GPS module. It makes a great pick if you want to avoid additional features.
- The second version (known as Version 2) has a GPS function that logs your exact location and driving speed at any given time.
You might need that information for security purposes or in case you need to prove that you weren’t driving faster than the speed limit of that place. That will come in handy when making an insurance claim, reversing a wrongful ticket, or proving that you are not at fault for an accident.
You should probably know that this review is for the A119 Version 2 – the one with a GPS module. While the GPS is a handy and much needed feature in a dash cam, it is not the first thing you will notice when you first install and use the A119. There are other features that will probably peek your interest first.
There’s no dash cam that is more pleasing to the eye than Spy Tec A119. It has a nice matte black finish that not only matches pretty much every car’s interior, but also conceals well. The wedge-shaped camera has dimensions of 6 x 4 x 5 inches and a weight of 12 ounces – small enough to stay discreet. If you place it by the rear-view mirror it will be completely hidden from somebody viewing from outside.
The A119 doesn’t rely on a switch to power up. It is completely automatic, just turn on your car’s ignition and the dash cam will start recording. When the ignition goes off so does the camera. Auto-recording ensures that the dash cam is always recording when you’re driving.
Stunning video quality
Fitted with an F/1.8 glass lens, Novatek NT96660 processor and OV4689 sensor, this dash cam comes equipped with everything needed to record crispy clear footage during a clear day, in low lighting conditions and at night. It records videos with a resolution of 1440P at 30 frames per second and 1080P at 60 frames per second.
The 160-degree viewing angle ensures that the field of view captured is wide enough to take everything on the road ahead and around the front part of your car.
Real-time and playback views
While the lens of the A119 faces forward, the 2-inch LCD screen faces you (inside the car). It’s great for getting a glimpse of what the camera is recording as you drive. Don’t get too distracted though, in fact it is probably wise to wait until you stop and then you can playback the footage and watch it on the screen. The videos come with accompanying audio, but if you don’t want sound you can easily mute the microphone.
With a built-in G-sensor, the Spy Tec A119 can automatically detect collisions and then save and lock all the footage taken just before and after the collision.
