Having a dashboard camera is a great first step in protecting your rights, and often times your wallet, but it’s even better if your dash cam is well-rounded. That means other than simply recording videos and taking photos, you’ll get more from it if it comes with with additional features like GPS, Wi-Fi, and parking monitor among others.
That’s exactly what the BlackVue DR650S-2CH brings to the table. In addition, it is a dual channel dash cam that can record the front and rear of your vehicle.
This small and stealthy dash cam is black in color, which makes it even more discrete. It’s virtually invisible to anybody who is outside the car. As a dual dash cam, the DR650S-2CH has two lenses; one facing the road ahead and the other one facing backwards.
In case you are not interested in the rear camera you can replace it with an interior camera – the 2-channel, infrared version (2CH-IR). Rather than recording the road behind you, it monitors the inside of your vehicle (backseat all the way to the back window). This is a practical option for cab and taxi drivers, Uber and Lyft drivers as well, because you might need to keep an eye on your passengers while driving.
Note that you can only choose one between a rear and an interior camera; not both. If you opt to go with the rear lens your BlackVue DR650S-2CH will come with a longer cable that can reach the back window (even for long vehicles like mini-vans). But if you choose the 2CH-IR version you will get a shorter cable because both lenses will be on the same mount. The infrared lights used ensure that your get the clearest footage even when the inside of your car has low lighting.
Apart from the two cameras, the BlackVue DR650S-2CH box contains:
- two mounts (for each camera)
- a 15-foot power cable that connects to your car’s cigarette lighter
- a coax cable that connects the front and rear camera
- microSD card
- trim pry tool
- and a user guide
Full HD footage
The front camera of the DR650S-2CH has a standard resolution of 1080P while the rear camera records videos of 720P at 30 frames per second. Both of them deliver fantastic images that are sharp and clear.
It is possible to choose the field of view that you want. During installation, you can position the front and rear cameras to face any direction you wish. Ideally you want to position them such that they offer the best view of the road ahead and behind you. As for the interior camera, its ability to rotate through 1290 makes it even easier to customize its field of view.
The dash cam has a built-in GPS that tracks your car’s speed and location at any particular moment. That can be really helpful in case of an accident. You can download that information to a Windows or Mac computer.
Wi-Fi and cloud
The BlackVue DR650S-2CH also has a Wi-Fi module that allows you to link the dash cam with a smartphone or tablet and transfer files without having to remove the microSD card. Additionally, it has cloud capability that allows you to stream the footage live on Facebook or YouTube.
Optional parking mode
For an extra $25, you can install the Power Magic Pro and enable your BlackVue DR650S-2CH to record even when your car is parked. Contrary to other cameras, this one switches between parking mode and driving mode automatically. This comes in handy in case someone vandalizes your car or attempts a hit and run.
