The Review

When it comes down to quality, there are very few dashboard cameras that come close to the Thinkware X500 D. This unit is packed with tons of handy tools for drivers; including front and rear cameras for standard recording as well as warnings. Its top-notch features make it arguably the most capable taxi cam in the market today. But that is not to say that it doesn’t have some weaknesses. Top on the list of its shortcomings is the fact that it doesn’t take snapshots. Apart from that, it would definitely have been the best dashboard camera ever created.

When you purchase Thinkware’s X500, you will get a full package that consists of one dash cam with a front and rear camera, a mount with a 3M tape, one charger, five adhesive cable holders, a microSD card with a 16GB capacity, a USB microSD card reader, a user manual, and your product warranty. The unit itself mounts using the tape provided. Please note that the mount allows the camera to swivel backward and forward only and therefore you should be very careful with placement. However, you can opt to remove the tape and use Velcro instead.

Comes with everything you need

The camera’s design and construction are simply fantastic. It is sufficiently compact and has a casing that is made of silver and plastic. The front part houses the lens, LED, and speaker while the left side has a power switch and memory card slot. The top has the rearview camera connector, mount connector, and a port for connecting the power cable. At the back, you will find four control buttons and a 2.7″ LCD screen.

As far as performance is concerned, the Thinkware X500 D records videos in segments that are one minute each and stores them in a micro SD card. One feature that adds to the uniqueness of this dash cam is its dual save technology. It has the ability to store backup footage in a built-in memory that is installed inside the camera. It has an accident sensor that stores footage that was recorded 10 seconds before and after impact.

The footage is saved in a special folder to avoid overwriting. If you want to preview footage you can do so using the 2.7″ LCD. It is clear enough for you to see details of the environment.

Unique Additional Features

The X500 D is packed with a comprehensive road safety system that you can enable or disable. They include:

  • Forward Collision Warning System (FCWS)
  • lane departure warning system (LDWS)
  • Front Vehicle Departure Warning (FVDW)

Each one does exactly as it sounds. The car camera notifies you when you are drifting out of your lane or if you are coming up behind a vehicle at a high closing rate. The front vehicle departure lets you know when the car in front of you starts moving, after having been stopped for at least 4 seconds.

The camera also has a speed zone warning system that alerts motorists when they are entering a zone where speed limit laws are enforced using cameras (like red lights or speed cameras). In parking mode, the camera can detect and record motion and incidents. But you need to hardwire it to your vehicle’s battery power before using this feature.

  • Has the option for front and rear camera
  • Integrated GPS system
  • Fitted with multiple warning systems (speed, red light, lane departure, etc.)
  • Records full HD footage with very clear video
  • Automatic temperature shutdown protection

  •  Does not take snapshots
  •  Relies wholly on USB power

Despite the few demerits, the Thinkware X500 D is a darling among motorists because of its superior capabilities. If you are looking for a dash cam that can offer you a few extra features like warnings, then you should totally get this one.
